Worth Their Weight: An Assessment of the Evolving Field of Library Evaluation

Abstract : This article reviews numerous library valuation studies, with emphasis on how libraries have used them to demonstrate their value in their communities. The studies include cost benefit analysis, economic impact and social returns on investment. An executive summary that includes key findings and recommendations makes this document an easy place to obtain an introduction to library valuation studies.

Using Information Architecture to Evaluate Digital Libraries

Abstract : Information users face increasing amounts of digital content, some of which is held in digital library collections. Academic librarians have the dual challenge of organizing online library content and instructing users in how to find, evaluate, and use digital information. Information architecture supports evolving library services by bringing best practice principles to digital collection development. Information architects organize content with a user-centered, customer oriented approach that benefits library users in resource discovery.

Library Instruction Assessment in Academic Libraries

SUMMARY : Determining the best methods of assessment for a library instruction program in a large research university can be a challenging task. Albert R. Mann Library at Cornell University Library has pilot-tested three methods of formative and summative assessment for its library instruction program-attitudinal, outcomes-based, and gap-measure-and determined not only key areas of improvement for the program, but also the benefits and drawbacks of each method of assessment.

A Method for Evaluating Library Liaison Activities in Small Academic Libraries

Abstract : This article presents a practical method for formative, self-reflective assessment of the liaison activities of individual librarians and to evaluate liaison activities in general. Many libraries evaluate their liaison programs, but few evaluate the effectiveness of individual librarians’ efforts within the program. Librarians of Rollins College redefined and re-branded their liaison program as “Your Librarian.” As part of this effort, the author surveyed the faculty and assessed the program and the effectiveness of individual librarians.

Performance Evaluation of Collection Development and Acquisitions Librarians

Abstract : Collection development and acquisitions activities are of great and critical importance to libraries. Likewise, performance evaluations in libraries are deemed to be critical; a great deal of time, energy, and emotion is spent on this library activity. Although such importance is attached to both collection development/acquisitions activities and personnel evaluations, little has been written on the link between the two; how to evaluate effectively those with collection development and acquisitions responsibilities.

The Evolution of Measurement and Evaluation of Libraries: A Perspective from the Association of Research Libraries

 Abstract : This paper reviews the evolution of measurement and evaluation in libraries from the perspectives of three important figures who have shaped the history of library assessment activities: James Gerould, F. Wilfrid Lancaster, and Duane Webster. Although Lancaster is about a decade older than Webster and almost half a century removed from Gerould, the contributions of the three individuals knit a common fabric in the development of assessment in libraries in the past century.

Evaluation Research: An Overview

Abstract : Evaluation research can be defined as a type of study that uses standard social research methods for evaluative purposes, as a specific research methodology, and as an assessment process that employs special techniques unique to the evaluation of social programs. After the reasons for conducting evaluation research are discussed, the general principles and types are reviewed.

The Suitability of Web Analytics Key Performance Indicators in the Academic Library Environment

Abstract : As the demand for library assessment grows, academic libraries are becoming more interested in Web analytics. Data are automatically gathered and provide information about a wide variety of online interactions. Libraries have long used simple counts such as visits and page views, but have more recently begun to choose strategic benchmarks, also known as key performance indicators (KPIs). Many common KPIs were created for commercial websites and are challenging to adapt for libraries.
