The Theoretical Model of an Inclusive Library for People with Disabilities and its Practical Implementation

Purpose and Originality: This study aims to analyse the concept of an inclusive and socially responsible library, to develop the theoretical model of an inclusive library for people with disabilities, and to investigate the practical possibilities for implementing this model in regional libraries in order to reduce social exclusion of people with disabilities and to increase their social inclusion. The paper presents the results of empirical research conducted in two counties of Lithuania.

The aim of the study was to establish the visually impaired students' information seeking behaviours, which comprises information needs, seeking and use. An introduction to disability legislation in the United Kingdom provides the legal framework for this paper. In the United Kingdom, this legislation has been recognized as an important incentive for libraries to improve their services to disabled people.

Η παρούσα μελέτη διερεύνησε τις αντιλήψεις, τις αξιολογήσεις και την ικανοποίηση ατόμων με προβλήματα ακοής και όρασης σχετικά με την πρόσβαση και τις υπηρεσίες που παρέχουν οι ελληνικές βιβλιοθήκες. Επιπλέον, αναζητήθηκαν οι προτάσεις τους για τη βελτίωση της υποστήριξης που λαμβάνουν από τις ελληνικές βιβλιοθήκες στο πλαίσιο της πληροφόρησης, της εκπαίδευσης και της εν γένει καλλιέργειάς τους.

Access for library users with disabilities

SCONUL promotes the social model of disability, which regards people as being disabled by social barriers. If no barrier exists, then a person with an impairment is not prevented from using services. These barriers may be physical, or attitudinal or behavioural. Sometimes inappropriate or inadequate responses create barriers for disabled people. For example, students may feel embarrassed about asking for a large-print library guide in front of other people.

Library Services for Persons with Disabilities

SUMMARY. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) prohibits discrimination with respect to the disabled in public entities and in "public accommodations and services operated by private entities." Passage of the ADA has prompted libraries all over the country to evaluate services to Ulese users and has generated a vast number of resources on the ADA and on services to disabled patrons. This article examines the burgeoning literature and presents a case study of The University of Alabama Libraries' efforts to meet these users' needs.

Τα τελευταία χρόνια οι Βιβλιοθήκες, και ειδικότερα οι Ακαδημαϊκές, "εκμεταλλευόμενες" τις δυ­ νατότητες που προσφέρουν οι νέες τεχνολογίες, μπορούν πλέον να επεκτείνουν τις προσφερόμε­ νες υπηρεσίες τους. και σε ειδικές κατηγορίες χρηστών, όπως είναι τα Άτομα με Ειδικές Ανάγκες (ΑΜΕΑ) και τα άτομα με προβλήματα δυσλεξίας, που μέχρι σήμερα αδυνατούσαν να εξυπηρετήσουν λόγω της δυσκολίας πρόσβασης στο χώρο τους αλλά και στο υλικό τους. Το «άνοιγμα» όμως των βιβλιοθηκών και προς αυτή την κατηγορία χρηστών, δεν είναι κάτι που πετυχαίνεται εύκολα.
