Έτσι όπως διαμορφώνονται οι διεθνείς συνθήκες, οι εθνικές οικονομίες αλλά και οι κοινωνίες, αναπτύσσουν μεταξύ τους σχέσεις αμοιβαίας εξάρτησης. Στην προσπάθειά τους να επιτύχουν συγκριτικούς βαθμούς απόδοσης, εφαρμόζουν ειδικές πολιτικές. Οι πολιτικές αυτές κρίνονται επιτυχημένες ή μη, ανάλογα με τα αποτελέσματα που επιφέρουν. Πολλές φορές τα αποτελέσματα δεν είναι αυτά που αναμένουν, λόγω των διαφορετικών θεμελιωδών κοινωνικών χαρακτηριστικών που διακρίνονται από χώρα σε χώρα. Βέβαια, αυτό δεν συμβαίνει μόνο σε επίπεδο χωρών, αλλά και επιχειρήσεων, μικρών ή μεγάλων.

Benchmarking (Συγκριτική Αξιολόγηση) είναι η διαδικασία σύγκρισης μιας επιχείρησης ή ενός οργανισμού σε σχέση με μία επιχείρηση που παρουσιάζει ξεχωριστή απόδοση στην ανάπτυξη της ή με μεγάλο αριθμό επιχειρήσεων του ίδιου ή συναφούς κλάδου. Η σύγκριση μπορεί να αφορά την επιχείρηση ως σύνολο ή διακριτές λειτουργίες (ή τμήματα) εντός της επιχείρησης και γίνεται σε έναν μεγάλο αριθμό από μετρήσιμες παραμέτρους λειτουργίας.

Abstract : The Web sites that academic libraries are developing for their research communities represent an important new aspect of information management. Comparative statistical analysis of Web site usage among similar institutions would improve librarians’ ability to evaluate the effectiveness of their efforts. A centralized voluntary reporting structure for Web server usage statistics, coordinated by the Association of Research Libraries’ (ARL’s) Office of Statistics, would provide a significant service to academic librarians.

Purpose

– The purpose of the paper is to benchmark two ISO 9001:2000 based quality management systems, one in the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain, and the other in Kuopio University, Finland.

Design/methodology/approach

– The paper is a case study in which both libraries' approach to the building of their quality management system are compared.

Findings

Abstract : This survey was a joint initiative between Society of College, National, and University Libraries (SCONUL) and the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), that since 2004 has sponsored a program to assist libraries with the assessment of services that they offer their users and the processes that support those services. It was based on an ARL SPEC survey published as SPEC Kit 303 Library Assessment in December 2007.

Reduced funding and customer demand for the best possible service require libraries to strive for continual improvement.  Benchmarking is a useful tool for evaluating current performance and finding new solutions.  Benchmarking can be done to find a new procedure or improvements to an existing procedure.  Benchmarking can also be used to set a standard or goal for service or productivity.  This paper will outline the steps necessary to carry out a benchmarking project

Abstract :  Purpose – It remains unresolved from the literature whether benchmarking is a useful and appropriate tool for the library and information services sector. The aim of this research is to gather evidence to establish whether benchmarking provides a real and lasting benefit to library and information services.

Abstract : This paper discusses the strengths and weaknesses of benchmarking project management and the difficulties of analysing the competencies and skills of project managers. Research has shown vast differences in the performance between leading companies and average companies in performing particular activities. By benchmarking leading companies, many firms have experienced significant success in upgrading their organisational capabilities. This paper begins the process for benchmarking project managers in an endeavour to improve management performance of similar projects.
