A dual approach to assessing collection development and acquisitions for academic libraries

Abstract : With a growing interest in evaluating the effectiveness of libraries, it is increasingly important that libraries find efficient ways to evaluate the collection development and acquisitions process. This requires a dual approach to explore both what was collected and actually used and also what was not collected which should have been.

Open Source Library Management Systems: A Multidimensional Evaluation

Abstract : Open source library management systems have improved steadily in the last five years. They now present a credible option for small to medium libraries and library networks. An approach to their evaluation is proposed that takes acount of three additional dimensions that only open source can offer: the developer and support community, the source code characteristics and the information schema. These dimensions allow for extended comparative product review not generally possible with proprietary software.

Worth Their Weight: An Assessment of the Evolving Field of Library Evaluation

Practitioner research in an academic library: evaluating the impact of a support group

Using Information Architecture to Evaluate Digital Libraries

Abstract : Information users face increasing amounts of digital content, some of which is held in digital library collections. Academic librarians have the dual challenge of organizing online library content and instructing users in how to find, evaluate, and use digital information. Information architecture supports evolving library services by bringing best practice principles to digital collection development. Information architects organize content with a user-centered, customer oriented approach that benefits library users in resource discovery.

Library Instruction Assessment in Academic Libraries

SUMMARY : Determining the best methods of assessment for a library instruction program in a large research university can be a challenging task. Albert R. Mann Library at Cornell University Library has pilot-tested three methods of formative and summative assessment for its library instruction program-attitudinal, outcomes-based, and gap-measure-and determined not only key areas of improvement for the program, but also the benefits and drawbacks of each method of assessment.

A Method for Evaluating Library Liaison Activities in Small Academic Libraries

Abstract : This article presents a practical method for formative, self-reflective assessment of the liaison activities of individual librarians and to evaluate liaison activities in general. Many libraries evaluate their liaison programs, but few evaluate the effectiveness of individual librarians’ efforts within the program. Librarians of Rollins College redefined and re-branded their liaison program as “Your Librarian.” As part of this effort, the author surveyed the faculty and assessed the program and the effectiveness of individual librarians.
