Implementing Total Quality Management: A Model for Research Libraries

This model for implementing total quality management (TQM) in a research library was developed as part of an effort by the Association of Research Libraries’ (ARL) Office of Management Services to create strategies and programs for introducing quality improvement approaches in research libraries. The model was presented to a group of ARL directors at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, January 1992.

National Cultures for Quality Assurance and TotalQuality Management

Abstract : National culture is becoming more and more recognized as a key element in determining the success or failure of quality initiatives. The adoption and the impact of quality management programs have differed from one country to the other. This paper outlines Quality Assurance and Total Quality Management and proposes the national culture dimensions that facilitate their implementation. The model of national culture developed by Hofstede is used for this purpose.

The use of Total Quality Management (TQM) in libraries and information services in Australia and overseas

Abstract : Total Quality Management (TQM) is a management philosophy which is driven by customer needs and a commitment to continual quality improvement. A system which focuses on processes as much as products, key components of its methodology include customer input, staff participation and continual measurement of its success. This essay summarises where TQM has been successfully used in libraries and information services, and includes an outline of its implementation in selected case studies from overseas and Australia.

Historical and Current Implications of Cataloguing Quality for Next-Generation Catalogues

Abstract : Discussions of quality in library cataloguing are traced from early library science literature to current debates. Three studies that examine dimensions of quality cataloguing in academic libraries, public libraries, and school libraries and a review of vendor processes update the issues surrounding a definition of bibliographic record quality and quality assurance processes.

SERVICE QUALITY IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES: AN ANALYSIS OF LibQUAL+™ SCORES AND INSTITUTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS

ABSTRACT : This exploratory study considered the problem of assessing quality in academic libraries. The research question that framed the investigation asked whether service quality scores from the LibQUAL+™ instrument were related to the following college or university characteristics: institutional type, enrollment level, or the level of investment made in libraries. Data regarding Carnegie classification, FTE enrollment, and library expenditures were collected for 159 college and university libraries that participated in LibQUAL+™ during 2006.

Total Quality Management in Academic Libraries - Best Practices

Abstract: Quality Management is one of the management challenges in libraries. The quality of the service provided makes the difference between academic libraries and other information service providers. There are a variety of quality management projects – mainly in public –libraries in Germany of which some will be introduced in this paper. Best practices in two academic libraries reveal how Total Quality Management (TQM) can be implemented and established in the day-to-day management of libraries successfully.
